Course around Nagasaki where Ryoma Sakamoto and Kaishu Katsu met - 1

Ryoma first visited Nagasaki when he was 30 years old. He met Kaishu Katsu, a member of the Opening of the Nation school, and became fascinated by his progressive ideas and became his disciple.
At that time, Nagasaki was the only city in Japan that traded with foreign countries, and was a place that connected Ryoma to the world he admired.
In Nagasaki, we will tour the places related to Ryoma Sakamoto and Kaishu Katsu!

Seirinzan Honrenji Temple

Seirinzan Honrenji Temple
A temple related to Kaishu Katsu built on the ruins of a church

This Nichiren sect temple was opened in 1620 by Honzuin Hie Shonin, a monk from Honkyoji Temple in Omura.
At the end of the Edo period, Kaishu Katsu, who entered the Nagasaki Naval Training School, stayed at Taijo-in Temple within the grounds of Honren-ji Temple for four years.

This temple once boasted a vast site and was said to be one of the three major temples in Nagasaki, along with Kodaiji and Daionji, but it was destroyed by the atomic bomb. The current main hall was rebuilt in 1955. It is said that in the past, it was a scenic spot overlooking the Nomo Peninsula.

The cemetery within the precincts includes the Takagi family cemetery (city-designated historical site), which served as the Nagasaki magistrate for generations, the graves of Junjiro Koga, the founder of Nagasaki studies, and Miura Gomon, a Nagasaki Nanga painter, as well as the graves of the Takagi family who served as Nagasaki magistrates for generations, as well as the tombs of Gomon Miura, a Nagasaki Nanga painter, and many others who were active during the Edo period and the end of the Edo period. There are graves of people who did.

Fukusaiji Temple

Fukusaiji Temple
A temple characterized by the ``Bankoku Mausoleum Nagasaki Kannon'' that watches over the city of Nagasaki

Ryoma and Kaishu's party stayed at Fukusai-ji Temple for about 40 days. There is also an episode where Ryoma and Kaishu had a sumo match on the grounds of this temple.

Fukusaiji Temple has a huge Kannon statue as its symbol. It is a venerable temple of the Obaku sect, which together with Kofuku-ji, Shofuku-ji, and Sofuku-ji, is called ``Nagasaki Shifuku-ji.'' It is said to have been one of the largest Toji temples in Nagasaki, and before the war it was designated as a specially protected building, which is now a national treasure.
However, it was destroyed by the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki. Today, the Bankoku Mausoleum Nagasaki Kannon, built to pray for the repose of the souls of the atomic bomb victims and war dead, quietly overlooks the city of Nagasaki.
The statue of Kannon that stands on top of the turtle-shaped mausoleum is 34 meters tall, and you will be surprised by its impressive size.
Additionally, the Fukusaiji Tang Monk Cemetery located within the Fukusaiji Cemetery is a designated historic site by Nagasaki City.

Mt. Manju Shofukuji Temple

Mt. Manju Shofukuji Temple
This is an Obaku sect temple and one of the Shifukuji temples in Nagasaki.

Shofukuji Hojo is said to be the place where the "Irohamaru Incident" meeting was held between the Kishu clan and the Tosa clan (Kaientai) led by Sakamoto Ryoma at the end of the Edo period. In 2020, volunteers donated the Sakamoto Ryoma Statue, making it a must-see spot for Sakamoto Ryoma fans.

In addition, the novel ``Gege'' written by Masashi Sada, a native of Nagasaki, was made into a movie, and Shofukuji was one of the settings. Shofukuji Temple appears as an important place where the main character's childhood memories and the meaning of the word ``Kaika'' are revealed. If you visit after watching the movie, you might discover a different charm!

Nagasaki Magistrate's Office Tateyama Office Ruins (Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture)

Nagasaki Magistrate's Office Tateyama Office Ruins (Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture)
Let's learn using all five senses! History and culture of overseas exchange in early modern Nagasaki

A unique hands-on museum built on the site of the Nagasaki Magistrate's Office, which Ryoma often visited.
During my trip with Kaishu, I visited there to investigate. Three years later, he appeared at the Nagasaki Magistrate's Office as a witness in the Icarus Incident. Some of the stairs and stone steps in the current magistrate's office date back to that time.

The permanent exhibition also introduces Nagasaki's unique culture, focusing on the history of trade with foreign countries, Christianity, and exchanges with Korea. The museum is designed to help you learn about the flow of Nagasaki's history up close, with an experience corner where you can learn using all five senses, such as puzzles, a hands-on experience making traditional crafts such as stained glass, and powerful multi-screen videos.

Nagasaki City Kameyama Shachu Memorial Hall

Nagasaki City Kameyama Shachu Memorial Hall
A memorial hall built on the site of Japan's first company, Kameyama Shachu, founded by Ryoma Sakamoto.

``Kameyama Shachu'' was ``Japan's first trading company'' and ``private navy,'' founded in 1865 by Ryoma Sakamoto and about 20 of his comrades with the support of the Satsuma domain and the wealthy Nagasaki merchant Ozone family. Kameyama Shachu, which was both a trading company and a political organization, carried out activities aimed at overthrowing the Tokugawa shogunate, and also started trading firearms with Glover Company, and engaged in commercial activities such as distributing weapons to the clan, transporting supplies, and other activities. We also conducted navigational training. It is also said that he mediated the restoration of the relationship between the Satsuma and Choshu clans, which had been in trouble, and played a major role in the conclusion of the Satsuma-Choshu Alliance.

Ryoma's breakthrough begins here.
