Day 1
Iojima Lighthouse

Iojima Lighthouse
One of the eight lighthouses built across the country under the Edo Treaty.
The Iojima Lighthouse, located on a hill at the northern tip of Iojima overlooking the entrance to Nagasaki Port, is one of eight lighthouses built across the country in 1866 under the Edo Treaty signed with Britain, the United States, France, and the Netherlands.
It was Japan's first iron-built hexagonal Western-style lighthouse, and it was fully lit in 1871. After it was temporarily turned on in 1870, lighthouse staff were permanently stationed in the dormitory (currently the Iojima Lighthouse Memorial Hall), but it was merged with the Kabashima Lighthouse in 1971 and is now unmanned.
In 1945, it was damaged by the blast of the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, so it was rebuilt with a square reinforced concrete structure, and later restored to its original hexagonal shape. The dome-shaped ceiling, which miraculously escaped damage from the atomic bomb, is still in use as it was during the Meiji era.
The view from the slope leading to the lighthouse is amazing, and it's a great photo spot where the white lighthouse stands out against the blue sea.
There is also a cafe nearby where you can enjoy your own coffee or hand-roasted tea while looking out at the lighthouse, allowing you to relax and enjoy the spectacular view.

Day 1
Nagasaki City Iojima Lighthouse Memorial Museum

Nagasaki City Iojima Lighthouse Memorial Museum
A valuable cultural heritage from the early Meiji period! Japan's first Western-style unreinforced concrete house

The Iojima Lighthouse Memorial Hall, made of Western-style unreinforced concrete, was opened in 1988 as a memorial museum in a Western-style house that was formerly used as a staff retreat (official residence for lighthouse staff).
It is a Western-style house from the early Meiji era with a veranda with seven columns in front. Each room has a mantelpiece, which is essential in the cold northern part of Io Island in winter, and the number of rooms and floor plan are in keeping with the period. It is an extremely valuable cultural heritage in terms of architecture, unlike any other retreat site.
Inside the museum are information such as ``Tomidaiba and Iojima,'' ``Changes of Western-style lighthouses,'' ``History of Iojima lighthouse,'' ``Changes in light sources and light equipment,'' ``Meiji lighthouse retreat and Iojima lighthouse retreat,'' and ``People related to Iojima lighthouse.'' Approximately 6 items are on display under six themes: ``and literature''.

A vast panorama of the horizon stretches out in front of you, and you can sit on a shaded bench and enjoy the breathtaking view while feeling the pleasant sea breeze from the sea. If you look through the binoculars installed at the observatory, you can see Takashima and Gunkanjima (Hashima).
As the name suggests, it is a perfect spot from which to view a very beautiful sunset, and on days when the sky is clear, you can even see the Goto Islands reflected in the setting sun.
At dusk, the sun setting over the sea paints the area an orange color, creating a very romantic atmosphere. It is one of the best date spots on Iojima.

Day 2
Catholic Magome Church

Catholic Magome Church
A church built on Okinoshima by believers who endured Christian persecution and preserved their faith.

The beautiful chalk Gothic Catholic Magome Church (Archangel Michael Cathedral) stands on a hill on Iojima (Okinoshima). More than half of the residents are still Catholic, and the church is a symbol of the island.

During the Edo period, when Christianity was banned, Christians who temporarily took refuge by boat to escape the severe oppression of Christians crossed the sea from Amakusa and other places, arrived at Iojima, and settled there.

The contrast between the white of the church built on a hill and the blue of the sea is beautiful, and it is lit up at night, creating a particularly majestic atmosphere.
