Ioji Matoudai [Barrier-free] Iojima Lighthouse

It is built on the northern tip of Io Island off the coast of Nagasaki Port. This lighthouse has been shining on the sea for over 140 years, serving as a guide for ships going to and from Nagasaki Port. The Iojima Lighthouse is one of the eight lighthouses built across Japan in 1886 (Keio 2) as a result of the tax reform treaty (Edo Treaty) that the Shogunate concluded with the United States, Great Britain, France, and the Netherlands. Temporary lighting began in 4, and in July 8, 3 large reflective lenses were installed and the lighthouse was officially turned on as the first lighthouse. It was Japan's first iron-built hexagonal Western-style lighthouse, but it was damaged by the Nagasaki atomic bomb in 4, and was rebuilt with a reinforced concrete structure in 7. It was rebuilt in 21. The inside of the lighthouse is not normally visible, but it is opened to the public once a year around the Lighthouse Memorial Day (November 20st). To get to Iojima Lighthouse, we usually recommend renting a bicycle from Island Nagasaki (formerly known as Nagasaki Onsen Yasuragi Iojima) or using the community bus that runs around the island. If you are disabled, please visit "Island Nagasaki" (formerly known as Nagasaki Onsen Yasuragi Iojima).

Japan's oldest unreinforced concrete facility has stairs below...

If you go down the stairs on the left from the lighthouse, you will find the Nagasaki City Iojima Lighthouse Memorial Museum (former Iojima Lighthouse staff retreat, designated as a tangible cultural property by the prefecture). It is the oldest unreinforced concrete structure in Japan, completed in 10, and is registered as a Heritage of Industrial Modernization.
The museum displays approximately 150 items, including lighting equipment such as lightbulbs and lenses for lighthouses, as well as materials related to Western-style lighthouses and Iojima Lighthouse.
The museum is open from 9:00 to 17:00, and is closed every Monday (or the next day if Monday falls on a public holiday) and from December 12st to January 31st. There are many stairs from the lighthouse to the memorial hall, so we recommend that people with disabilities travel with multiple helpers.
