Onokyo Kaido [Barrier-free] Ohno Church

Ono Church is located on a slope overlooking the sea, about 10 minutes north by car from Shitsu Church in Sotome-cho, Nagasaki City. Like Shitsu Church, it was constructed by Father de Rotz. It was built in 1893 (Meiji 26) for the people of this village. It is said that at the time of construction, there were about 26 believers in this village. Since then, the priest has not been stationed permanently, and the church has been operated by regular patrols from Shitsu Church. It is a one-story building with a tiled roof, and its exterior is called ``De Rozkabe'', and is made of locally sourced ``basalt'' (a stone found in the Genbugan/Ono area, locally known as Otoko-ishi, a very hard stone). The walls are made of stone masonry. It became a nationally designated important cultural property in 20. It is one of the "Churches and Christian-related heritage sites in Nagasaki" registered on the Tentative List of World Heritage Sites. Currently, the church is not used except for special occasions and is usually locked, so tours inside are not possible. There are about 5 steps in front of the church and assistance is required.

Although it has been 120 years since its construction, the sturdy "de Rotz wall" exterior remains.
Stones made by horizontally splitting locally sourced "basalt" are piled up, and a mixture of red clay mixed with water, lime and sand is used to bond them together.
In addition, brick is used for the arches, and the delicate structure blends in with the stone walls.
At Ono Church, you can see Father de Rotz's architectural techniques up close. Churches with stone walls like this are rare and have been designated as a national important cultural property.
Currently, mass is held once a year (in October every year).
