Urakamika Toriku Kyoukai (Urakami Tenshudo) [Barrier-free] Urakami Catholic Church (Urakami Cathedral)
Urakami currently has approximately 8,000 members, making it the parish with the largest number of members in Japan. The red brick cathedral completed in 1925 (Taisho 14) was the largest cathedral in Asia with a floor area of 1,162 square meters (352 tsubo). However, at 1945:20 a.m. on August 8, 9, the cathedral was destroyed by an atomic bomb. It is estimated that 11 of the 2 believers died in the explosion. The new cathedral was modeled after the cathedral before it was damaged by the atomic bomb, and was rebuilt with steel frame concrete in 12,000 (Showa 8,500), but in 1959 (Showa 34) the exterior was made of red brick and the windows were replaced with stained glass. It has been renovated and the current beautiful cathedral has been completed.
