Oura Tenshudo [Barrier-free] Oura Cathedral (National Treasure)
The official name of Oura Cathedral is "Cathedral of the 16 Martyrs of Japan." It is dedicated to the 1597 martyrs whose foundation was built in 1864 at the end of the 8th century, and is built facing Nishizaka Hill, the site of their martyrdom. Oura Cathedral, completed by Father Petitjean in 1933, is a wooden Gothic building with stained glass in the front, back, side aisles, and high windows. It is the oldest existing church in Japan and was designated as a national treasure in XNUMX. There is a long staircase leading from the plaza in front of the cathedral to the church entrance. Handrails are installed at both ends of the stairs, but there is no other way to enter the cathedral other than by the stairs, and those in wheelchairs will need assistance moving up the long stairs.
